Expert Appointed to Review Source Code

Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly has appointed a lead technical expert to inspect the source code for various Microsoft Windows products to determine whether the company's claims about the impossibility of separating out various middleware applications are true. Lee A. Hollaar, a University of Utah's School of Computing professor, will lead a small team of experts in reviewing the code and report back to the judge about whether it would be technically feasible for Microsoft to ship a "stripped down" Windows version as requested by the nine non-settling states and the District of Columbia.
Hollaar and his team--which previously inspected Windows source code for courts in other cases regarding Microsoft--will review the latest versions of Windows, including Windows XP Home and Professional Editions, and Windows XP Embedded, a componentized version of the OS that is specifically designed to allow for the mix-and-matching of applications and capabilities. Their exact findings will remain confidential, according to a court protective order.
