Sun conforms success of Microsoft.NET

A sure sign that Microsoft's dot-Net strategy is gaining momentum: The software giant was sued Friday by archrival Sun Microsystems. While Sun said the lawsuit centers on past actions, Michael Morris, general counsel, added: ''Microsoft's continuing practices... represent a threat to lawful competition.'' The lawsuit's timing suggests Sun is not counting on nine states and the District of Columbia to slow dot-Net in a remedy trial to begin next week.
''This seems to be Sun saying the battle is not going well, so we've got to fight our own,'' says Leonard Orland, a University of Connecticut antitrust professor.
''I don't think we're going to see many more lawsuits,'' says Gartner analyst David Smith. ''Microsoft's two biggest enemies have now weighed in, and most other companies aren't as willing to . . . antagonize Microsoft.''
