Microsoft Presses Bias Strategy

Microsoft Corp. yesterday landed its hardest punch so far in efforts to embarrass rival corporate executives testifying against the company in antitrust hearings. Pressing a strategy of portraying Microsoft competitors as biased and out to cripple it, the company's lead attorney produced e-mails showing one executive offering to publicly modify his anti-Microsoft stance in exchange for a business deal with the software giant.
The attack came after Liberate Technologies Inc. chief executive Mitchell E. Kertzman said in written testimony that Microsoft intends to use its monopoly on computer operating systems to control an array of home devices, including interactive television boxes, game boxes and other appliances. Liberate, based in Silicon Valley, makes software for interactive television and competes with Microsoft.
