As war looms, peace groups take to the Web

Peace activists girding for a possible U.S.-led war against Iraq are increasingly turning to the Web to voice their opposition and organize meetings and demonstrations against military action.

Care2 Inc., an online network of activists, has launched a Peace Action Center at http://www.care2.com/takeaction/peace, for example, that allows activists to locate congressional representatives and send letters and faxes. The group is hoping that it will be able to flood the U.S. Congress with antiwar messages with actions taken through the site. The site has only been up for a couple of weeks and so far more than 120,000 letters have been sent, a Care2 spokeswoman said.

Care2 isn't the only antiwar site shifting into high gear. United for Peace and Justice is a national campaign bringing together a range of organizations opposed to the war. Its site, at http://www.unitedforpeace.org, gives information on nationwide and local events, offers anti-war alerts and the opportunity to donate to the cause.
