Microsoft VP outlines harsh spam strategy

A high-ranking Microsoft executive says U.S. companies should be barred from taking e-mail addresses off the Internet to find targets for unwanted e-mail ads. Senior Vice President Maggie Wilderotter, who runs business strategy for Microsoft, said yesterday that the practice of harvesting used by spammers should be banned. The federal government should strengthen the ability of Internet service providers to sue senders of spam on behalf of customers, she said. Wilderotter spoke at the Progress & Freedom Foundation's summit in Aspen, Colo.
