Microsoft school decision held until 2002

A federal judge in Baltimore on Thursday postponed until next month a decision on the proposed billion-dollar settlement of class-action antitrust cases against Microsoft. U.S. District Court Judge J. Frederick Motz said he will not decide until after Jan. 10 whether to endorse the settlement deal, which would require the company to spend hundreds of millions of dollars to put software and computers into some of the poorest schools in the United States.
Motz had said he would issue a decision on the settlement proposal by mid-December. But the judge said in a brief statement that he would hold off to give Microsoft and settling attorneys more time to try to negotiate a compromise with dissenting class-action lawyers.
