Microsoft Preps Freon/HomeStation for Xbox2

The long-rumored HomeStation device never made it past the planning stages at Microsoft, but a follow-up to the company's Xbox game console is indeed in the works. Dubbed Freon because "it's the coolest secret project at Microsoft," the Xbox successor adds important consumer-oriented capabilities such as pausing live TV and hard-drive based video recording, or DVR (digital video recording). Of course, this sounds suspiciously like the plans for HomeStation--a combination Xbox and UltimateTV device. But what differentiates Freon from other efforts is that it has the backing of Microsoft chairman Bill Gates, who is reportedly a "big fan."
