Microsoft on Wednesday slammed the government's argument that the Supreme Court should reject the company's request for appeal. In its legal brief, Microsoft countered eight points made by government lawyers in a 26-page document filed almost two weeks ago. But Bob Lande, an antitrust professor with University of Baltimore School of Law, said he would be shocked if the Supreme Court accepted Microsoft's request for appeal.
Microsoft and the government also are scheduled to file a joint status report with U.S. District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly on Friday. It is unclear whether that filing might be delayed because of the national tragedy.
Microsoft will ship an update to Windows 2000 Datacenter Server next year. The planned product, Windows Datacenter Server Limited Edition, will deliver better scalability and performance for E-commerce, data visualization, and data-mining applications, according to Microsoft.
Unlike that Microsoft product, Windows Datacenter Server Limited Edition will be based on the company's new "Whistler" operating-system code. The 32-bit system will target servers containing 16 or more Intel CPUs. Microsoft says it has increased the product's performance and scalability for online transaction processing, online analytical processing, and data-mining apps, by improving its "lock contention" capabilities, which manage how users access a database, and its ability to manage computing resources for large workloads.
Hewlett-Packard was once the major brand of printers sold by Dell Computer, but times are changing. Dell Chief Executive Michael Dell said Monday that his company is increasingly emphasizing other brands of printers in its sales efforts.
Dell's drift on printers, to a certain degree, illuminates some of the current challenges facing HP, which last week announced plans to acquire rival Compaq Computer.
Dell has changed alliances in the past following mergers. Digital Equipment at one time was one of the principal providers of field support for Dell. After Compaq bought Digital Equipment in early 1998, that relationship faded and then lapsed.

Microsoft announced Monday that a new version of its high-end Windows line, dubbed Windows Datacenter Server Limited Edition (Datacenter LE), will soon be available. Datacenter LE is targeted at customers who need the absolute highest in scalability and performance in a single machine solution with 16 or more microprocessors.
"Windows Datacenter Server Limited Edition continues to build on the great enterprise-class features and functionality we introduced in Windows 2000 Datacenter Server," said Cliff Reeves, vice president of Microsoft's Windows .NET Server Solutions Group.
Stardock has issued two important Windows XP-related releases; the first will help users ensure that they're getting the best video performance from Windows XP, while the second is a final beta release of the company's much-anticipated OS skinning application.
The first application, XBench, is freely available from the Stardock Web site. It addresses an issue the company discovered early in the XP beta, where most video drivers were poorly handling the new 2D features in the XP shell--such as alpha blending fade effects and shadows.

The cell phone industry is about to unleash a wave of new phones that are capable--at least theoretically--of tasks ranging from e-mail retrieval to video and music streaming. These combination cell phones/personal digital assistants include the Nokia Communicator, which debuts mid-2002 and will let consumers wirelessly download video e-mails. Microsoft's Stinger-based phones will be unleashed in March with a specially designed Web browser and a way to get to corporate e-mails on the go.
As expected, PC makers on Monday launched a bevy of new computers that combine Pentium 4 processors with standard memory. These machines don't perform as well on many applications as similar computers with Rambus memory, but in general they cost less. The result: 1.5Ghz Pentium 4 PCs typically starting at $799, sans monitor. Previously, starting prices for Pentium 4 PCs ranged from $1,000 to $1,300, although a few configurations could be found for $799.
